Greenwood County has two distinct kinds of well customer, and they want almost opposite things. Around Lake Greenwood there is established lakefront and near-lake property where the demand is largely seasonal and largely outdoor — irrigation, landscaping, boat washing, pool top-up, all of it concentrated into the summer months. Out in the rural county, a well is the household supply and the requirement is year-round reliability at a modest rate.

That difference matters because a fracture-fed Piedmont well has limited storage. It recovers at whatever rate the fractures feed it, and no faster. A lake property running heavy irrigation through July is drawing that reserve down during precisely the hours the household also wants pressure. It is the single most common complaint we hear from lakefront owners here, and the fix is usually either a separate irrigation well or added storage — not, as people often assume, a bigger pump. A bigger pump on a limited well just empties it faster.

Geologically this is Piedmont crystalline rock — granite, gneiss and schist — and it drills accordingly. Wells generally run 250 to 500 feet, with yield determined by the fracture system rather than the footage. Greenwood County has areas of notably tight rock where wells go deeper than the county average, which is worth building into a budget rather than discovering partway through.

Hardness, iron and manganese are the standard water-quality findings. On lakefront properties, iron staining on docks, hardscape and light-coloured siding is the complaint that usually prompts the call. It is cosmetic, it is treatable, and the treatment depends on the actual concentration — which is why we test first.
