Greenville County rises from rolling Piedmont in the south to the Blue Ridge escarpment in the north, and that relief is the thing that makes drilling here different from the flatter counties further southeast. It is still crystalline bedrock — granite, gneiss and schist — but topography now has a real say in the outcome.

The pattern is reasonably consistent. Valley bottoms and draws tend to have deeper weathered saprolite above the rock and more fracturing within it, because that is generally why the valley is there. Ridgetops and upper slopes tend to have thin soil over tight, less fractured rock. Two wells on the same property, one in the draw and one on the knoll, can produce quite differently. On a large parcel that gives us something to work with; on a constrained lot it means being realistic about what the available location will support.

Most of Greenville proper is on public water, so the calls we take inside the metro are usually irrigation wells or treatment work. The private-supply work is concentrated out toward Travelers Rest, Marietta, Cleveland and the rural northern part of the county, along with the fringes around Simpsonville and Fountain Inn where development has run out beyond the water mains.

One Upstate-specific point worth raising: crystalline bedrock in this part of the state has elevated radon potential, and radon can enter a household through well water as well as through the slab. It is not universal and it is not a reason for alarm, but it is testable, and if you are already testing your air for radon it is worth testing the water too.
