Well Drilling & Repair in Florence, SC
Deep Pee Dee aquifers deliver serious volume β and water with a chemistry worth understanding before you drill.
Florence County & the Pee Dee
The Pee Dee Has Excellent Aquifers. The Water in Them Is Unusual.
Florence County sits on the Coastal Plain with a thick sequence of sand and clay layers beneath it β the Black Creek and Middendorf formations principally. These are productive, laterally continuous aquifers, and a properly screened well here will deliver volumes a Piedmont bedrock well could not approach at any depth. For agriculture, which is a large part of this county's economy, that matters enormously.
The water chemistry, however, is genuinely distinctive, and it is the thing most worth knowing before you commit to a depth. Deep Black Creek water in the Pee Dee region tends toward a sodium-bicarbonate character β naturally soft to the point of feeling slippery, with a mineral balance that some people notice immediately in the taste. It can also carry elevated fluoride, higher than you would find in most South Carolina groundwater, and in places enough to matter for young children's dental development.
None of that makes the water unusable, and we are not raising it to alarm anyone. We raise it because it is a live design decision: screening a shallower aquifer instead of the deep one often gives you different chemistry, sometimes at the cost of yield. That is a trade worth making consciously rather than discovering after the well is finished. We will test what we hit and tell you what you have.
Iron and hydrogen sulfide are common throughout the county as well, particularly in the shallower units. As with everywhere on the Coastal Plain, screen slot size and gravel pack matter β get them wrong and you get sand in the lines and a pump that wears out early.
