Elgin Sits in the Sandhills. That Is Good News for Your Well.

Elgin sits just east of the Fall Line, in the belt of ancient dune sand known as the Sandhills. For anyone paying to have a well drilled, that is a favourable place to be. Instead of chasing fractures through hundreds of feet of granite, we are usually setting screen into water-bearing sand — a more predictable job, a more predictable yield, and frequently a shallower and less expensive well than the same house would need twenty miles west in Lexington County.

The northeast Columbia corridor through Elgin toward Lugoff and Camden has absorbed a lot of growth. Subdivisions, custom builds and rural parcels being converted to residential have all pushed demand for new wells in Kershaw County. County water lines have not followed every road, and on a great many of these properties a private well is not a preference, it is the only option.

The Sandhills do come with one genuine caution. Sandy soil drains extremely fast, which is excellent for a septic drain field but means surface contamination can reach a shallow water table quickly. Casing depth and a proper grout seal are what stand between your drinking water and whatever runs off the surface. This is not a place to accept a well cased shorter than it should be, and it is the main thing we check first on an older Elgin well that has started testing badly.

Water chemistry here tends toward the soft and slightly acidic side rather than the hard water the Piedmont is known for — the sands simply do not contribute the calcium that weathering granite does. Iron is still common. A free water analysis settles which of those you are actually dealing with.
