Rural Dorchester County Still Depends on Its Wells.

There are two Dorchester Counties. The eastern end, around Summerville and Ladson, is suburban, well served by public water, and the well work there is essentially all irrigation. The western end — out toward St. George, Harleyville, Ridgeville and Reevesville — is farming country, thinly populated, and public water distribution covers a limited share of it. There, a private well is still what supplies the house.

That distinction matters because the two ends need different things from us. Irrigation wells can be designed around convenience and cost. A household supply in rural Dorchester County has to be reliable year-round with no municipal fallback, which raises the standard for casing, sealing and pump specification.

Geologically this is the Lowcountry, but moving inland from the coast improves the picture. The salinity risk that dominates well design in Mount Pleasant and coastal Charleston recedes as you move west, and the shallower units become more usable. The Floridan limestone remains the reliable deep target, bringing with it the hardness and hydrogen sulfide that characterise Lowcountry water generally.

Agricultural demand in the western county adds the usual consideration: a well designed for a farmhouse and later asked to carry irrigation or livestock is running beyond its brief. Where that is the plan, it is much cheaper to specify for it at the outset than to rework it later.
