Well casing repair fixes the steel or PVC pipe that lines your well and keeps dirt and surface water out. The usual signs are sand in the water, water that suddenly tastes or looks wrong, or a casing that's cracked, rusted or leaning at the top. Small damage can often be sealed or lined. Bad damage can mean new casing or a new well. Austin Drilling has worked on SC wells since 1960, and we'll tell you which one you've got.
What does a well casing actually do?
The casing is the pipe you see sticking out of the ground. It runs down the hole and holds the walls open. It also keeps rain, runoff and soil out of your drinking water. In South Carolina, a new well's casing must stand at least one foot above ground, with a sanitary seal on top (SC Regulation 61-71). That seal is the lid on the whole system. Break it, and whatever's in your yard can reach your tap.
What are the signs your casing needs repair?
Sand or grit in the water is the big one. So is water that turns cloudy or muddy after a hard rain. A new bad taste or a failed bacteria test can point to a crack, too. Up top, look for rust holes, a split pipe, a missing cap, or a casing knocked crooked by a mower or truck.
Sometimes the sign is quieter. One customer told us their water "started coming in slow on/off." A slow drop in flow can mean debris is getting in where it shouldn't. It can also be the pump. That's why we check before we guess.
How does a well man check the casing?
Austin Drilling starts every well casing repair at the wellhead. We look at the cap, the seal and the pipe itself. Then we look down the hole, often with a downhole camera, to find cracks, rust-through or collapsed sections. We'll test the water as well, since contamination tells us a lot about where a leak sits.
Please don't try this part yourself. Dropping a flashlight or tape down the casing can get stuck. If there's a pump in there, it's wired to live power. Leave it to us.
Can a damaged casing be repaired?
Often, yes. Minor cracks or leaks can usually be sealed with a liner or sleeve set inside the old casing. Severe damage is different. A collapsed section or casing rotted through in several places may need partial or full replacement (watertreatmentservice-prs.com; kochergeowelldrilling.com).
And sometimes the honest answer is a new well. If the old casing is failing top to bottom, drilling new can cost less than chasing leaks for years. We'll lay out both options in plain English. Then you decide.
What happens after a casing repair in SC?
The well gets disinfected. State rules require chlorine disinfection after any well repair, held in the well for at least four hours before it's flushed (SC Regulation 61-71). We'll retest the water after that. If you want to understand that step, read our guide to shock chlorination for well water.
A well that's become a contamination source can't just be left alone, either. The state can require it repaired or sealed once it gives notice.
What goes into the price of well casing repair?
Every well is different, so every quote is too. Depth matters. So does how far down the damage sits. A cracked top section is a smaller job than a collapse deep in the hole. Steel versus PVC changes the work. So does whether the pump has to come out first. We'll inspect it, show you what we found, and give you a real number.
FAQ
Is well casing repair worth it on an old well?
Usually, if the damage is limited to one section. If the casing is failing everywhere, a new well may make more sense. Our guide to an old well on your property covers that call.
My pump was stolen. Is the casing still good?
Maybe. One owner asked us exactly that. A theft can damage the wellhead, so we inspect the casing before anyone buys a new pump.
Can sand in my water mean a bad casing?
It can. It can also mean a worn pump or screen. An inspection tells you which.
